Hej The Growlers!
När What We Do Is Secret avslöjade att de bokat The Growlers till en miniturné i Sverige exploderade bloggar och magasin av lycka. Bandets solskensdränkta, surf-psykadeliska melodier har förtrollat amerikanerna ett par år nu, men i Europa är de mindre kända. Djungeltrumman ringde upp sångaren Brooks Nielsen på en bruten telefonlinje till Kalifornien. Han svarade. Vi snackade ett försvunnet Black Keys-samarbete, Burger Records och om det här med att ta över Europa.
Hello!
– Hi!
What's up, Brooks?
– I'm cleaning my apartement really. Haha. Last nights party was… Well. Let's just say it's a complete disaster.
You are going to Oslo soon, aren't you?
– Oh shit. I just realized that we leave like… tomorrow? That's weird. I need to get organized.
Yeah, do you know that it's really cold here compared to sunny California?
– That's cool. I've been to cold places.
But it's like really cold! Almost Alaska-cold.
– What? How many degrees below zero is it?
Last weekend it was around -15 degrees Celsius.
– Okey. That's really cold. I'll bring one coat, then.
Only one?
– Yeah. The inside is warm, you know.
You've been to Europe once before?
– We played in London some time ago. That was awesome! And now we'll spend a month in Europe and play in a handful of countries. That's so cool!
Sort of taking over Europe?
– Do you think so? Maybe? I hope.

– Haha, no. It's just me, I'm always mumbeling. Sorry. I'll try to speak clear, but you know…
Thanks! So now you're finally coming to Sweden! Do you know anything about our fine country?
– I know I'm going there. And that it's beautiful, and you are all beautiful.

– What? No!
Yes it is. Anyway. What can we expect from your gig in Gothenburg?
– You never know. I suppose. But you can expect smiling, that's for sure. We always smile. Always.
What do you expect from us in return?
– I expect you to make other people happy. All right?

This friday's what you guys call Good Friday. Isn't that the day when Jesus suffered the most? Why do you call it Good Friday?
– Haha. That's just catholic stuff. I don't pay much attention to that. Do you?
No, not really. But why should people come see you instead of sitting at home, feeling sorry for Jesus and all?
– They have to find some sin to get into! That's why. And we can feed them with that, that's for sure.
Speaking of God, and such. What's up with Bill Murray?
– Really, everyone else talks alot about that. I don't care about it. But he likes us. And he comes to see our shows. Especially in Austin, where we play alot. We play – Bill is there. Basically.
I saw on Instagram and blogs that people are really starstruck when meeting you. Do you have alot of fans except for Bill?
– Haha. I suppose. They really like us down here on the West Coast. We play here often, and people are loving it. And so are we.
What about the music scene on the West Coast? Can you recommend some cool bands? You know, to keep the Djungeltrumman readers up to date.
– Just check out Burger Records! There you can find it all! They have all the great bands right now. We went to a local festival the other day, and their bands played. Shannon & the Clams for example! It was awesome. And like… White Fence.
By the way, whatever happened with Black Keyes? The record just… never came out?
– To be honest. I got cold feet. The music… it just sounded to big. We really wanted to keep it all weird, you know. So it did'nt work out. But we are still friends and all.
So what is your music like then?
– Summer.
Where will The Growlers go after taking over Europe?
– We'll go to Mexico! You know. No one ever does. It's got such a bad rep, and it's dangerous there. But living in Southern California makes it different. We've been there. It's no big deal for us. We just really want to go there.
Do you have any final piece of advice for our readers? Any wisdoms?
– Wisdoms? Eh… I sure do! But I don't know them? I need to know them first. Anyway. The best piece of advice, the most important thing, is that people must act happy. Even if they are not happy, the must act so. Don't go around being a bummer all the time. That's not cool!
