Hej Small Black!

Att Instant är lika med fredagsfester med svenska band på scen vet väl varenda kotte, men den här veckan gör arrangörerna allt för att förvirra oss. Plötsligt ordnar deonsdagsklubboch bokar två amerikanska akter. Confusion, som Henrik Berggren skulle ha sagt. Tur är i alla fall att banden som spelar båda två är himla fina, och att vi sagt hej och lite annat till en av de du får lyssna till under kvällen. Hiya Small Black! Who's representing you today?

– This is Josh Hayden Kolenik – Native New Yorker, and singer/keyboard player of the group.

How'd you introduce yourselves to the Swedish masses?

– I think most folks heard about us of through our first single Despicable Dogs and the video featuring Uncle Matt:

So, you're coming to Gothenburg this week. Why would we be idiots if we missed your gig?

– If you like the records, you're gonna like the live show even more. We do all the songs full band style, with guitars, live bass and drums. Definitely not a boring laptop band.

If someone wants to buy you a drink after the show, what should they get you?

– Greyhound is my drink of choice. Vodka-grapefruit with a splash of soda.

You've played some of the worlds biggest festivals, but if you got to put together your own and had all the money in the world to do so, who'd be on the lineup?

– My Bloody Valentine, The Smiths, Talk Talk, The Blue Nile, Bjork and Kanye.

Comparing New Chain with Limits of Desire, how would you say your sound has evolved?

– We spent a lot of time developing our production aesthetic for Limits of Desire. We probably worked on 30-40 songs for the record, but honed in on the ones that felt easiest and then tried to produce them in a bigger way than New Chain. We really wanted the bass to be standout and for the vocals to be legible and as out front as we could be comfortable with.

Which is the best band in the world right now?

– Emeralds was my favorite band, but they just broke up. I just want Talk Talk to get back together. Kanye's probably the best dude going though.

And which one's the absolute worst?

– 2 CHAINZ.

What's your plans for the autumn?

– Going apple picking after we finish up this European tour and then heading to Austin, TX for Fun Fun Fun Fest. We've got some new songs under construction to that might show up sooner than you think.
