Hej Sarah Gayle Meech!

Publicerad Senast uppdaterad

You’re just about to release your second album, Tennessee Love Songs. Say something about it that’ll make people anticipate it with excitement!

– Well, there are 15 songs, all written by me, and I co-produced it as well. It’s my second album – bigger and better than the last, haha! The songs are all inspired by my last four years of living in Nashville, Tennessee. The good, the bad and the ugly – it’s all there!

The release was successfully crowd-funded through Kickstarter. What’s it like being an artist without a label?

– It’s a lot of work to be an independent artist, nothing happens unless I make it happen. But it’s very satisfying, at the end of the day, to know that I can do it and only have myself to answer to!

One reviewer described you as “A broken-hearted, tattoo-covered feminist troubadour that is both unavoidably tomboyish and also delicately feminine…”. Do you think it’s unnecessary to focus too much on your being female in a male-dominated culture (as I am indirectly doing now); or is it in fact rather important (because feminism rocks)?

– I don’t care about gender in music, if music is good then it’s good. Point blank. I’m not on any mission because I’m a woman. I’m just doing what comes naturally to me. But I think that writer’s description of me is pretty fucking awesome!

You’re originally from way out west, but relocated to Nashville some years ago. How mandatory is that move within your chosen genre?

– It was mandatory for me. I needed to be immersed in country music, songwriters and players. I had a lot to learn, and I knew I would grow as an artist in Nashville. It’s surely not for everyone, but it’s exactly where I need to be right now. There are many opportunities in Nashville, if you’re willing to work really hard and put in the time. There are so many talented players and writers and it’s very inspiring to be around.

Are you friends with Nashville-based Swedish country singer Jill Johnson?

– No, I don’t know Jill. Let’s invite her to my show!

Let’s! Oh, and congratulations, by the way, on being crowned “Female Outlaw of the Year” at this years Ameripolitan Awards! But what does belonging to the outlaw movement mean, exactly, in modern country?

– Thank you! I don’t necessarily call my style of music or myself an outlaw, but I can see why people would call it that. Outlaw represents going against the grain, doing things your way, creating your own thing. Being independent, I have 100 % creative freedom. And if I did get signed to a record label, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Hopefully I’ll help to inspire someone else to create music the way they want to, regardless of trends or popularity.

Come Friday night you’ll be performing in Gothenburg. In what kind of mood should one roll up to a Sarah Gayle Meech gig?

– You should roll up ready to have a good time! I have Nashville guitarist David Tanner with me, and we’ll be playing songs from my new album and my first album, with a surprise classic country cover or two in there as well!

And, what should one order at the bar, to complete the experience?

– A beer chaser, a tequila shot…!
