Hej Mew!

Hi Mew! Who's representing you today?

– Hello Jungle Drum. This is Jonas Bjerre

You've been playing together for ages, how have you've managed to stay together for all these years?

– I think partly for just that reason – that we’ve known each other for so long. Actually, our bass player did leave the band for a while, but has recently rejoined with the band. As a band we have developed our own kind of musical language, and we communicate in our own way, which I think is a strength through all these years.

Yeah, this summer Johan Wohlert was playing live with you again. What was it like having him back in the band? And was the plan always for him to return?

– Johan rejoined before those shows, he has been part of the writing and recording process of this new album, and is a full member once more. It is great having him back. He left all those years ago because of touring fatigue and because he found his upcoming role of being a dad incompatible with this kind of life. We are glad to have him back.

Tell me about your upcoming album! Is it completely done now? And how is it different from what you've done earlier?

– It is done and we can’t wait to release it! Frustrating sometimes, all the time and work that goes into something, and then additional time has to go into planning its release. We wanna put it out as soon as possible, but there are still things we need to set in motion first. The album sounds unmistakably like Mew, but we are allowing new directions too. It’s been about absorbing a lot of the things we’ve been subjected to, and remaking them in our own “image”. For instance, the song Making Friends, which has already been released in some form, a different version from the album version, is probably the closest we’ll ever get to sounding like hip hop. Of course it sounds absolutely nothing like hip hop, but in our world, this is what we’d do if we did hip hop!

Why did you choose to work with Michael Beinhorn again?

– We had worked with him before, on our 2005 album Mew and the Glass-handed Kites, and knew what he was capable of. Our early song ideas fit his sound world very well, and it was a natural step to approach him.

Did you steal the pokemón's name, or did it steal yours?

– They totally stole ours! We formed in 1995 and had never heard of pokemon. We forgive them though.

What's the best thing that ever happened to Mew?

– That the stars aligned in such a way that we all got together through music and managed to create something that – at least to us – is pretty unique. Over the years we have had so many amazing experiences through our work and travels, and I for one feel truly blessed.

… And the worst?

– I think the worst thing that happened to us is ourselves. Or at least, the way that we have oftentimes made things much more difficult for ourselves than they needed to be. It’s kind of a syndrome in the band, which we have almost embraced as an inevitability at this point, and is part of why it takes us such a terribly long time making albums.

What can we expect from your gig here in Gothenburg?

– We are playing a lot of songs from the new album, which we’re excited about! It’s always a buzz to perform songs live for the first time. We’ve also been diving into our older repertoire and will be playing some really old songs too. So in our minds, it will be the best of both worlds! About time we play Gothenburg again, we are looking forward to it!
