Hej Lucius!
Hi there! Who are we talking to?
– Hi! We're Danny and Pete.
Tell us a bit about Lucius!
Danny: – The girls (Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, Ed.) wanted to make a record about four+ years ago that was more energetic … something "they could dance on stage to" and I started as a producer to help them achieve that vision. A little while after we started making the record, I stopped playing with my old band and Jess asked if I wanted to not only produce but join the band. I introduced the girls to Andy to Pete and we all started playing shows together about two years ago. After all five of us became Lucius we decided to try and echo the symmetry of the girls (singing everything together/in unison) by having two of everything in the band. Two guitars, two drummers, two bass sources, two keyboards and, every once in a while, two mustaches.
Alright! So, about a year ago you released the album Wildewoman, how did you come up with that title?
Danny: – Holly was called a wildegirl as a child, and now she is a woman.
Sounds like a cool thing to be! Listen, I really love your band outfits. How important is the visual representation of your music?
Pete: – The more we stay on the road the more we realize how important it is to have a certain visual quality to the show to accompany the music. I think sometimes it's just the visual balance of matching outfits, or having a visual backdrop, or hiring a friend to do crazy lighting. They all add to the experience, hopefully allowing the audience to get more and more lost in the music. Also, it's easy to travel with only a few outfits on the road – it means that you only have to worry about clean socks and underwear!
Seems practical. The 60s are obviously a significant influence to you, which three things from the 60s would you bring to the present?
Pete: – MLK, JFK and Sam Cooke.
Danny: – Jimi Hendrix, the price and abundance of working U47 microphones and the overall integrity of Fender and Gibson guitars that are now all made very terribly.
Great choices! This week you started your European tour, is there a difference between touring here and in the US?
Danny: – There are definitely a few differences. I would say in general most European cities take very good care of the artists even if your draw isn't particularly big. Also we will cover twice as many miles in the U.S. but with half as many cultural differences from city to city. It's really wild to be in three different countries in the span of three days!
What's your take on the Swedish music scene?
Pete: – I have known about the Swedish metal scene as it has gotten a lot of media attention all of over the world. Metal is actually one of the few genres of music that is both super popular and at the same time not really in the limelight. I'd say my two favorite musical groups from Sweden are Dungen and Jose Gonzales.
Danny: – When I was in high school I was a huge Cardigans fan! The album Life was a huge inspiration for me in terms of production and how it relates to unconventional songwriting. Actually, Pete and I's old band almost made a record with the guy who produced Life (The Cardigans’ second studio album, Ed.) although he wanted to make the record with just the singer of our band and I remember he said one of our songs reminded him of "midget clown witches with crooked fingers."
