Hej Dent May!

Hi Dent May, how are you?

– I'm doing well. Just landed in Stockholm.

You're coming to Gothenburg this weekend, with what emotions do you hope to leave the Gothenburgians?

– I don't really care what emotions are felt by the audience as long as there's something. Indifference is the worst that can happen. Of course I want people to feel good and happy when I play, but if someone really hates it, that's cool in its own way.

So how'll you feel just after you've left the stage?

– Ready to hang out with some new friends.

Tell us about Warm Blanket! I read that you pretty much play all the instruments on the record yourself? What was the recording process like?

– I recorded the album by myself in a house I rented in St. Augustine, Florida. I recruited a few others to play things like strings, horns, and pedal steel, but I played the rest. It was a big challenge and there were a lot of emotional ups and downs. I'm looking forward to making an album with my band next.

You don't seem to have any problems jumping from one genre to another. Do you think that's ever a problem? Or is it all good?

– I learned everything I know about music from the internet. Growing up in Mississippi, it was tough to find cool weird stuff so I spent a lot of time clicking on random wikipedia and allmusic.com links. I feel like genres are pointless and that genre distinctions are disappearing quickly. I listen to everything, and I want my music to reflect that.

Cats Purring sounds like just about the greatest thing ever, and I understand you put on shows at Cats Purring Dude Ranch. What's the best gig you've ever seen there?

– My favorite show at the ranch was probably Real Estate on Easter Sunday. It's usually pretty stressful having a couple hundred strangers in my home watching a band, but the atmosphere for that one was super laid back. In contrast, the Grimes show was pretty legendary. The floor broke, and it was almost a very dangerous situation.

Loads of 12 year olds out there wanna start bands, but don't. Why do you think you actually did it?

– Honestly I don't really know how to do anything else but make music. I went to film school for a while, and while I think I could do anything if I worked at it, music is what I've been doing pretty much my entire life.

If you could give that little band starting guy some sort of tip, what'd you say to him?

– It seems like a lot of young artists struggle to finish work and put it out there. My best advice is to develop your vision and your taste, and then when it comes to writing and recording music, turn off the critical thinking part of your brain and just go for it. Then move on to the next thing and don't look back.

Finally. Which would you rather fight: 100 duck sized horses, or one horse sized duck?

– I would never fight an animal, real or fictitious.
