Hej Citizen!

Hi Citizen! How would you introuduce yourself to the swedish masses?

– Hi. I'm Citizen.

Fair enough. How come you started making music? What kind of musical background do you have?

– I've always been involved in music in one form or another. My youth was spent as a recipient, just being exposed to all theses amazing sounds of Motown, jazz and lover's rock from my parents to garage and house from my older cousins at family gatherings. I spent years subconsciously absorbing all this information and somewhere along the line I kind of unknowingly decided to do something with music, at some point.

I understand there's loads going on with your scen in the Queens hometown?

– Yeah, she raves with us every Saturday. Last week someone had to tell her to go home. She was getting way too freaky on the dancefloor and it's all well and good the scene being really inclusive and allowing everyone to have a good time but when their safety is compromised you know..? That's a completely different story all together.

I hear you, an old lady like that need to watch out, no hips shall break. So, is there anyone in perticular, from that scene, that you'd like to tell Djungeltrummans readers about? Apart from Her Majesty that is.

– Far too many people to name. The scene is amazing at the moment – so many new producers coming through but somehow not saturating the scene. Everyone is bringing their own twist to the dancefloor, evolving, or in some cases regressing, the sound's vibe into something completely new and exciting.

Why do you think the UK's always been so forward and ground breaking when it comes to electronic dancemusic?

– I think mainly there is always a lot of undercover repression here. As a society we're supposed to be really restrained and square. Throughout the years subcultures have revolted against this schema expressing themselves through the arts, demonstrations and riots. I think it's in our culture now to buck the status quo. Whenever things get too stale in the UK there is always another revolution somewhere. The underdog becomes the shot caller… until the next time.

You're coming to Gothenburg this weekend, what we can expect from your set?

My Hi-NRG remix of Conway Twitty.

Imagine that you've got one weekend to make someone fall in love with London. What'd you do, and where would you take them?

– That's easy. Ok, so Friday it's all about house parties. Some unfortunate soul has just opened their warehouse doors to the steaming masses looking to offload their troubles and drama of the week through dance, self medication and small talk. The dj is some unannounced globetrotter. This will go on until the early hours – with the numerous twenty four hour off licenses supplying social cohesion at a reasonable price.

Sounds fantastic! But what about the rest of the weekend?

– Saturday we'll go to a Love fever party and repeat the above, this time with better music. Sunday it's off to Three Crowns for a Bloody Mary and a traditional english sunday roast, Maybe a rooftop party. This will hurt on Monday basically.
