Hej A Place to Bury Strangers!
Om du gillar musik vars ljudvolym känns ända in i bröstet, ska du inte missa det Göteborgsaktuella bandet A Place to Bury Strangers.
Hi! What are you guys up to at the moment?
– We are on the ferry to Copenhagen after the night in Berlin. Eating old fish, chasing away brats from our sleeping den.
I wanted to start by talking about your 2012 release Worship. What inspired you when you made the album?
– We really tried to think about those earliest experiences in recording and that excitement when first discovering electric guitar. So it was a lot of looking back on life and thinking about high school and the first musical listening experiences. This was the first record Dion and I had worked on together and we just let our friendship grow and develop a style together.
But why didn't you want to work with a producer?
– We are the ones creating the music. A producer although perhaps smart in making music more comercially viable or better in some ways is always just a little dishonest for me. Our music is all about every aspect of it and one of those aspects is production.
I read that you guys change the writing and recording process for each release, what was your process for this one?
– We tried to write it as fast as possible and wrote at least a song a day for about 6 weeks. We recorded it while putting ourselves in dangerous situations to capture the real urgency of recording a good take. We lit amps on fire, threw them in the air, and recorded all over our warehouse. The performance had to be as good as we could because we couldnt go back and get the same thing happening again.
You are based in New York, in what ways have the city influent your sound?
– There are a lot of amazing artists around NYC for inspiration and the city is extremely tense and hard to live in so time is very precious. You have to really be doing something of worth or you are better off going to other shows or parties or events.
A Place to Bury Strangers have been called the loudest band in New York. Do you agree with that?
– It all depends. We fluctuate in volume based on how we feel and where we are. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But we don't care. It's not a badge of honor to be loud. Personally I don't want to see a band that is loud for the sake of loud.
Where is the best place to bury strangers?
– On a ferry on the way to Copenhagen.
Dion is the the newest guy in the band, right? What did his background from more of a garage-rock scene bring to the band?
– Robi our drummer actually is. But Dion defintely did bring a more garage and punk feel to the band which I have always loved. He and Robi are also very extreme players so it keeps the challenges up and makes me strive to be a better player.
Is there a difference between how you want your sound to be live, and recorded? Do you view those as two separate forms of your music or are they one and the same? I mean, do you intend each to be a separate experience?
– Definitely. They are two completely different experiences and so we don't try to fight it. We embrace the differences and record music with no restrictions to be listened to through speakers and create as much of an environment as we can. Live we cover the audience in sound and vision to confuse them and transform them to their subconcience.
How do you want your audience to feel right after you’ve finished your show?
– Inspired to create.
Whats the best thing in the world right now?
– Something only imagined and longed for.
Thanks!
– Thanks so much!
