Viet Cong

Blanda lite postpunk och lite indierock, tillsätt sen delar från rockbandet Woman och avrunda med en bohemisk feeling så får du Viet Cong. Typ. Vi snackade lite med bandets Monty inför deras klubbgig på Stay Out West.

Hi Monty! How are you?
– I’m good! We’re just driving from Columbus Ohio to buffalo New York on tour with Metz and another band from Toronto called Crosss.

Literally on the road! To someone who never heard your music, how would you describe it?
– Noisy rock with keyboards?

Haha cool. Would you say that you’re inspired by post punk? What is the best thing about that genre?
– I like it as a genre because it’s so wide.  There are a lot of pretty diverse sounding bands that fit into ”post punk”.

Speaking of post punk, what would you say is the most frustrating thing about our era?
– Everyone just looks at their phones all the time and doesn’t interact with real people as much.

If we talk more socially than music-wise, what are your roles in the band? Who tells the jokes, who likes to sleep and so on.
– We all tell jokes pretty constantly. Danny likes to sleep although during a tour everyone kind of sleeps when they can.  Mike’s good at finding fun stuff to do when we have time off.  I kind of organize things and figure out what we need to be doing when and all that.

What is your music philosophy?
– We all just want to make the best music that we can so I think we’re all pretty hard on each other and push each other to do better. There’s definitely no ego’s when we’re writing or recording.

… and your life philosophy?
– We’re all on the hobo renegade right now and don’t really live anywhere so our key philosophies right now are: ”live for free or die”, ”live where you are” and ”no complaining in the van”.

You are visiting Way Out West soon, what can we expect?
– We’re gonna play a rock show? We just did some recording over the past bit so hopefully we’ll be playing some new material by then.
